25 years of service in Rwanda

CARE International  commemorates 25 years of service in Rwanda. “Twenty-five years is a quarter of a century. It is plenty of time to learn, adapt and grow with the people of Rwanda,” says Phil Christensen, Country Director for CARE International in Rwanda. “As an agency that is committed to serving the most vulnerable, we feel it is important to pause and reflect on our years of service in this extraordinary country as well as to share with you the highlights of our journey.”

KNOWLEDGE ON FIRE

Throughout 2008, 670 attacks on the Afghan education system were carried out: school buildings were burnt down, teachers and students were killed.2 Between January 2006 and December 2008, 1,145 attacks of different natures were reported: grenades, night letters or verbal threats to teachers, the murder of students and education personnel. Education is under attack in Afghanistan.

RAPE AS A WEAPON

Every day, the lives of women and girls are being destroyed by seksual violence. Used as a tactic of war to terrorise communities, with devasttating effect, rape is the hidden reality of conflict.

The UN Security Council has committed to tackle this violence before, during and after conflict, and to help the women and girls left to deal with the consequences.

LIVING ON THE EDGE OF EMERGENCIES

By 2020 the world will have spent more than £ 165 billion this century fighting emergencies in Africa. Yet it has been estimated that just £ 132 billion, if spent differently, could instead halve hunger by 2015. Rather than simply saving lives, this money could be spent improving lives and ending the cycle of emergencies.
